Southlake Texas to Host Independence Weekend Sept 11-13, 2008

Army Sgt. Ryan Major returned from Iraq with dreams of pursuing a business degree. But Ryan was injured by an insurgents Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while on foot patrol in Ramadi, Iraq which took away both of his legs above the knee and caused a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The 22-year-old infantryman has spent the past eighteen months recovering from his wounds at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington D.C. and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His progress has been nothing short of remarkable, but mobility has remained one of his greatest obstacles since sustaining his injury. Until the veterans not-for-profit corporation stepped in to provide him with a $25,000-special robotic chair. The iBOT gives Ryan the mobility to traverse the college campus he will soon attend, as well as the simple everyday things, like navigating the steps at friends’ homes.

The chairs are provided by the Independence Fund, a Florida-based non-profit, formed by veterans and their families, dedicated to helping injured veterans regain their mobility. Ryan’s was the tenth for the fund.
