Green Dragons Win the USSSA 16U State Baseball Championship
By: Coach Don Jensen
The Southlake Green Dragons, a team comprised exclusively of local Southlake players, recently won the North Zone USSSA 16U State Baseball Championship in Euless on June 30th, against eleven other teams from various parts of North Texas. Andy Wambsganss, Mayor of Southlake, on behalf of the City Council, presented a proclamation to recognize the Southlake Green Dragons winning their Championship.
The Dragons seeded third after pool play and went into the elimination brackets defeating the sixth seeded Irving Brewers. Next, the Dragons faced the second seeded Dallas Banditos, which had defeated their previous opponents by an average margin of eleven runs. The Banditos are a regional select team, meaning that each player is hand-selected from the best talent in each local town or community over a wide region. The Dragons did damage early on the Banditos and never allowed them to get in the game. The final score was 7-0 Dragons.
The Championship game was played against the Texas Stix - Black, an eight seed team that defeated both the four and first seed to meet the Dragons in the finals. The Texas Stix are also a select, or "multi-zip code" team based out of Euless. The Championship game was truly exciting as the score after the regulation 7 innings was tied 4-4. The Stix managed to score a run in the top of the eighth, so it was up to the Dragons to take control. The Dragons prevailed, winning the game 6-5 with some clutch hitting in the bottom of the eighth.
