Business of the Month - July 2009 - Coal Vines Pizza & Wine Bar
Coal Vines is the newest concept developed by Joseph Palladino. It is a casual neighborhood restaurant that is reminiscent of Mr. Palladino’s upbringing in New York. Coal Vine’s is a specialty pizzeria complemented by a full menu and a small, but select wine list that is synonymous with quality and also a reasonable price point.
Stone Crest Pools
North Texas' Premier Custom Pool & Spa Contractor, Landscape Designer & "Backyard Specialist"
Stone Crest Pools specializes in first class, premium quality design and construction for residential home-owners and custom builders. Serving the Metroplex in construction for over 15 years, the Johnston family offers a single source for custom pools and spas, outdoor kitchens, living spaces, landscaping and irrigation. With a business built on the cornerstones of quality, honesty and integrity, it is not surprising that Stone Crest Pools has grown solely by word of mouth.
“Our motto is ‘the customer is the business and our business is the customer’, and we never lose sight of this. There’s a lot of talk about great customer service, quality, and a hands-on approach in our industry, but we deliver what we promise,” says Doug Johnston, who takes pride in delighting his customers with a job well done. Growing up in construction working with his Father and 2 older brothers has helped Doug understand the importance of dedication and a job well done.
"Expert project management and oversight are crucial to quality workmanship, timely, professional installation, and ultimately, to customer satisfaction,” explains Mishika Johnston. “We’re in contact with each customer during all construction phases. A family member is on-site daily to supervise and manage every project.”
GETTING STARTED
Your experience with Stone Crest Pools begins with a free consultation. After answering a few questions over the phone, they will meet with you at your home to gain an understanding of your goals, lifestyle and preferences, and to view the area you have in mind. While there, they will perform field measurements, shoot elevations and take digital pictures.
The next step is a master design plan developed by Stone Crest Pools that includes an itemized budget with a “shopping list” appropriate for your project. For example, an outdoor living room and kitchen can include items like outdoor heating and lighting, ornamental fences, arbors, landscaping, a luxury gas grill, ice maker, misting system, warming drawers, refrigerator, ceiling fans, a surround sound audio system and even an outdoor television.
“Our approach is very collaborative and we never try to hard-sell you,” says Doug Johnston. “Included in the consultation, we create an animated 3-dimensional rendering of your new backyard, complete with a 360° virtual tour. Two-dimensional drawings and top down views just don’t compare. We can actually show the customer what their new oasis will look like.”
Once you have agreed on the design and budget, Stone Crest prepares a timeline and schedules construction. Some clients wish to approach a project in stages over a couple of years, and they are happy to work with you to phase your master plan based on your priorities.
TOP ACCOLADES FOR STONE CREST POOLS
Stone Crest Pools is proud to have recently received top honors at the 2009 Southwest Regional Pool and Spa show where they were awarded 2 Gold awards and one Silver award, from the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals. Stone Crest Pools was the only North Texas Pool Builder to bring home the Gold this year.
Just last year Stone Crest was honored at the 2008 Texas Pool and Spa Show. The company received 1st Place in new pool construction and 1st Place in pool renovation—high honors indeed. Stone Crest Pools was the first to be awarded the Presidents Award in recognition for being the recipient of the First Excellence in Construction Award for new and remodel pools and for setting a high standard for all award winners that will follow.
“We were thrilled to have been recognized for our work,” said Doug. “The most important thing to us is that our pools are the absolute best that can be built. Whether large or small, each pool is every bit a matter of pride and lasting investment to our family as it is to our customers.”
CUSTOMERS PRAISE STONE CREST POOLS
When we first considered converting our small backyard into a living space with a pool, we really entertained the thought almost as a joke. There was no way either of us thought we would be able to fit a pool, spa and kitchen in the allowable space and still have room to live and play. Stone Crest came through with an amazing design that is even better in real life. We couldn't be happier with the final outcome and spend every minute we have lounging outside. It's definitely exceeded every expectation. Thanks Stone Crest!

“I contracted Stone Crest Pools in the spring of 2007 to design and build a backyard retreat that would include an outdoor kitchen, pool renovation, fire pit, fireplace, and new landscaping. Unlike the competition, Stone Crest’s amazing design really captured the essence of what I was looking for, and their use of 3D CAD software allowed me to visualize the final project prior to construction. Design is critical but of little importance without quality construction and excellent service. These factors are what really separated Stone Crest from other contractors I’ve used over the years. The spring of 2007 was one of the wettest years on record, but Doug and his team were diligent about trying to keep the construction on schedule. The crews were on site when they said they would be, and they always delivered high quality results. I’m very satisfied with the quality of the construction and the customer service I received. The look of the final project far exceeded my expectations.”

Are Your Kids Disengaged?
Submitted by: Lois Frazier - Monart School of Art - 817-993-1374
Are you fostering a disengagement in your children? In our stressed lives, it takes little effort to give in to the “wants” versus “needs” of our children. Have you noticed everyone seems to be plugged into something whether that be a cell phone to their ear or a gaming device in their hands, or spend their free time watching movies? What has happened to conversation and connecting to others?
Those same kids who scream for the latest video gaming system or hand-held device are feeding an inner beast that is demanding to be fed. Everything is faster, brighter and seems to process our brains in a need-more kind of way. It doesn’t give your brain a chance to slow down, truly process and problem solve in a growing manner. We are building a generation of people who consider a conversation with a stranger a foreign concept and something to be abhord. Can you teen sit and talk to you during dinner or do they have to have their cell phone at the ready?
