Mayor Proclaims September as Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Month

PKD_Proclomation.jpg

The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation is devoted to promoting research to find a cure for PKD and to improving the care and treatment of those it affects; and,

Whereas, Polycystic Kidney Disease is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting 600,000 Americans and 12.5 million people worldwide – regardless of gender, age, race or ethnic origin; and,

Whereas, the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation is a volunteer-driven organization that helps coordinate and run each and every Walk for PKD event. Because of this, 81 cents of every dollar donated goes directly toward patient education and research. The event commitment reflects support and responsibility at the local level, beginning with individual families and communities, to ensure continued improvement in the quality of all citizen’s lives; and,

Whereas, the City of Southlake has an interest in the development and provision of high quality services to children, youth and families who suffer from this disease. During the Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Month and beyond, the citizens from the City of Southlake will join together to recognize and further their commitment to reach a cure for those affected by Polycystic Kidney Disease; now,

Therefore, I, Andy Wambsganss, Mayor of the City of Southlake, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim September, 2008, as Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Month

North Texas Walk for PKD - September 20th

Please join us on September 20, 2008 at Southlake Town Square for the North Texas Chapter’ Walk for PKD. PKD stands for Polycystic Kidney Disease, which is a disorder that causes cysts to grow in the kidneys and eventually leads to kidney failure. The only treatment options are dialysis or a kidney transplant. PKD affects 12.5 million people worldwide with an estimated 12,000 people in the D/FW area.

There is no cure, but there is hope! The not-for-profit PKD Foundation leads the fight against PKD through research funding, advocacy, patient education and support. In 2008, the PKD Foundation will fund $4 million dollars in vital PKD research. Last year, in North Texas alone, $88,710 was raised to fund two research grants: one at UT Southwestern in Dallas and one at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston.

The Walk for PKD takes place in 60 cities nationwide the third weekend in September. The North Texas Walk will be held at Southlake Town Square and we will be joined by our event emcee Larry Mowery, Meteorologist for Channel 11 News. Come enjoy the live music from the Southlake Swing Band, see the Dancing Dogs and enjoy a fun filled morning for the entire family. Registration begins at 8am, Children’s Walk is at 9am and the PKD Walk begins at 9:30am.

Go to www.pkdcure.org to register or to form a team. All it takes to form a team is 4 or more walkers, a great team name and a designated captain. When you register online you can take advantage of a host of FREE online team features like emailing members, tracking team progress and online fundraising.
